Bee Season, A Gift To The World

When I was a child, I was terrified of bees. All I knew about bees was that they had stingers and if you were stung, it was painful.

This changed on my walks to first grade. My mother was home with a toddler and a new baby, so I hiked to school and back each day. I tended to dawdle on the way home, admiring homes and gardens on the way, driving my mother crazy.

A neighboring woman on this perambulation had a garden, and most days on my return trip, she was working in her garden. I don't recall her name. I know that at the age of six, I thought she was terribly old. I knew she was a widow, that she spoke English with an English accent, and that she loved her garden. I know today that her garden is what Americans describe as an "English garden"--stone walkways through a profusion of flowering flower beds.

I used to stop at her quaint fenced front yard on the way home and admire her flowers. No one had fences in their front yards in those days, but her picket fence seemed uniquely appropriate for her flower beds, walkways and Tudor-style architecture. She saw my curiosity and told me the names of some of the flowers, explaining that some blossomed in the spring and lasted for just a few weeks, and others lasted through the summer. These in turn were replaced in summer and fall with new blooms which led into the next season's growth.

She also saw that I was terrified of bees. Her garden swarmed with bees, and when they buzzed near, I would gasp and jump back from the fence.

"Bees are what make the flowers bloom," she explained to me. "Look, they won't hurt you." She placed her hand next to a bumblebee, and when she lumbered onto the hand, the gardener carried her over to me. My elderly mentor placed her hand next to mine, and sure enough, the bumblebee, having decided her hand was barren of pollen, came over to check my hand.

My fright vanished. The thrill of having this large, fat, fuzzy bee sitting calmly on my hand made me feel both honored and protective. (Of course, bumblebees are the most docile of bees, but I hadn't learned that yet.) After that, I loved bees. I loved them for their industry, for their grace, for their cooperative living, for their pollination and for the honey on my toast in the morning.

So for many years now, I have watched with dismay as Colony Collapse Disorder has spread throughout the world. Israel21c's Rachel Neiman weighed in with the latest developments:

CCD is characterized by the mysterious and inexplicable loss of worker bees in managed honeybee colonies. There is often still honey in the hive, and a few immature bees, but the adult bees have vanished. It was first noticed as a problem in the winter of 2006/7, when beekeepers began reporting losses of 30 to 90 percent of their hives, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Since then, the crisis has grown. Last winter, a survey by the US Department of Agriculture/Agricultural Research Services (USDA-ARS) and Apiary inspectors showed that 36% of America's 2.4 million hives were lost to CCD. The survey covered almost 20% of America's 1,500 commercial beekeepers, and suggested an increase of 11% over the losses of 2007, and 40% over the losses of 2006. Similar losses are being reported in Italy, Spain, Greece, the UK, and other countries across Europe.

There is much at stake. "Today it's not about honey but about pollination," says Eyal Ben-Chanoch, CEO of Beeologics. Pollination using managed honeybees is a critical element in modern agriculture; more than 130 crops in the US require pollination, with an annual crop value of $15 billion.

Without bees, there is no honey. There is no pollination. There is no food and no beauty. Bees, small though they are, are life.

No one knows exactly what causes CCD. But, it appears that Israeli scientists may have identified a primary cause of CCD and taken steps to cure it:

One virus strongly associated with CCD, however, is Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus (IAPV). Identified by Hebrew University of Jerusalem plant virologist Prof. Ilan Sela in 2004, the virus causes honeybees to suffer from shivering wings, followed by paralysis and death outside the hive. In 2007, the journal Science published research by a prestigious team of US scientists and researchers that found a significant connection between IAPV and CCD in honeybees.

[I]n the summer of 2007, [Beeologic's] founding research team - Ilan Sela, biochemist Dr. Eitan Glick and doctoral student Eyal Maori - began work to develop an affordable cure for the virus.

They turned to a longtime collaborator, plant virologist Dr. Gal Yarden...and to Nitzan Paldi, an expert in bee pollination and an experienced entrepreneur. Beeologics was founded as a commercial entity in October last year with the help of Eyal Ben-Chanoch, CEO of the new company.

Beeologics' solution, Remebee, utilizes a mechanism called RNA interference (RNAi, also known as gene silencing) a mechanism that inhibits or hinders gene expression. "The technology is based on naturally occurring biological agents. Conceptually, we're introducing the factor that prompts the silencing response," Paldi tells ISRAEL21c. "We didn't invent gene silencing. However, as far as we know we are among the first to use it commercially on non-humans."

According to the company, the patent-pending Remebee provides protection from IAPV and other bee viruses. The technology is potentially applicable to all bee viruses, precludes the possibility of virus breaking resistance, is non-toxic and leaves no residues in either honeybees or their honey.

We won't know with any certainty for a year, when the trials are finished. But I am proud today that Israelis have led the search, and perhaps found the cure, for the bees. We humans are concerned with flood, fire, famine, disease and war as it effects us -- and all too often overlook the small but essential creatures that make this planet fruitful.

We are the Stewards of G-d's Earth, all of us, and I am pleased to see my people in the forefront of research to save our bees.

I pay you suckers to be statesmen and to handle the ocassional national emergency.

Why We Love Our Children....

Okay, this isn't mine. But it was too funny not to share:

Why do we love our children?

1) NUDITY

I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a
woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark
naked!

As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my 5-year-old shout from the
back seat, "Mom, that lady isn't wearing a seat belt!"

2) OPINIONS

On the first day of school, a first-grader handed his teacher a note from
his mother. The note read, "The opinions expressed by this child are not
necessarily those of his parents."

3) KETCHUP

A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup out of the jar. During her
struggle the phone rang so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the
phone.

Her daughter, happy to oblige, did so, saying, "Mommy can't come to the phone to talk to you right now. She's hitting the bottle."

4) MORE NUDITY

A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker
room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing
towels and running for cover.

The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, "What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a little boy before?"

5) POLICE # 1

While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was
interrupted by a little girl about 6 years old. Looking up and down at my
uniform, she asked, "Are you a cop?"

"Yes," I answered and continued writing the report.

"My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police," she said. "Is
that right?"

"Yes, that's right," I told her.

"Well, then," she said as she extended her foot toward me, "would you please tie my shoe?"

6) POLICE # 2

It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the
station. As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and
I saw a little boy staring in at me. "Is that a dog you got back there?" he
asked.

"It sure is," I replied.

Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the
van. Finally he said, "What'd he do?"

7) ELDERLY

While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins,
I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was
unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the
canes, walkers and wheelchairs.

One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, "The tooth fairy will never believe this!"

8) DRESS-UP

A little girl was watching her parents dress for a formal party. When she saw her dad donning his tuxedo, she warned, "Daddy, you shouldn't wear that suit."

"And why not, darling?"

"You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning."

9) SCHOOL

A little girl had just finished her first week of school. "I'm just wasting
my time," she said to her mother. "I can't read, I can't write, and they
won't let me talk!"

New Home Jitters

I should be following Livni's attempts to form a government. I should be watching the U.S. elections more closely. I should be paying attention to Ahmadinijahd's latest bellicosity. I should be perusing the latest developments in the world-wide financial meltdown. I should be helping Nir Barkat get elected mayor of Jerusalem. I should be involved in doing "something" about the educational system here. I should be volunteering at a food bank I've wanted to help at. I should be back in ulpan.

I'm doing none of these things because I am absolutely paralyzed by New Home Jitters. Jitters over final payments; jitters over last-minute builder/installer mistakes; jitters over packing and moving.

The Husband is right. This is the last move. We're tooooo old to do this any more. I can no longer multi-task.

I could do this in the Old Country, BUT I was younger, fluent in the native tongue, accustomed to the BS and knew how to handle it.

This morning the Builder telephoned. There is some problem I didn't understand having to do with electricity and the elevator. Nu? So why is he calling me? I still don't know. Yossi grabbed the phone and talked to him; they joked around a bit, Yossi told him "no problem," and returned the cellphone to me.

"What?!" I asked, in a fog of anxiety.

"Nothing, Sarah. There's no problem. I'll fix it," he assured me. "Fixing it" somehow involves contacting Chevrei Hashmal, which also didn't reassure me. Yossi had taken us there at the beginning of construction to get some paperwork processed that okayed extra electrical work. Don't ask me what -- I just did what he told me to do.

Yossi called me an hour later and told me he'd handled it all on the telephone, and not to worry.

Not to worry? Words to live by....someday I'll try not to worry. Just not today.

Travels With Yossi: How Not To Be A Freier

We're down to the wire. Yesterday, we went again to the apartment and saw that the windows are mostly in, as well as all of the doors. Yossi came with us, B"H -- and immediately noticed that the trissim to the mirpesset (the shutters to the porch, Statesiders) were manual and not electric.

"Sarah, didn't you ask for electric?" Yossi asked me.

Uh, yes, now that you mention it--and we also paid the electrician extra to put in the switches for electric trissim. The bigger tris is heavy, and we're old and not getting any younger. Seemed like the way to go.

"This isn't electric--see, no motor, just a pull." Yossi whipped out his cellphone and called the kablan's secretary. I could follow the conversation in part, but what it boiled down to was "I'll check." She checked, called back and confirmed that Yossi has a steel-trap memory: BOTH doors to the mirpesset have electric trissim.

I only remembered one door.

Why does Yossi remember these things? Because, first of all, he's the smartest guy I've ever met in my life. Second, he's taken it upon himself to be our guardian angel in matters relating to settling in Israel (G-d bless him!). Third, he's Israeli and thinks like an Israeli--he has pointed out to me the numerous ocassions where Israelis simply rip off the Anglo olim. Not from malice. Not from prejudice or dislike. Simply because this is a society where everyone scrambles to make a living, and everyone is on guard against The Other Guy making a living unfairly against him. No one wants to be a freier (a sucker), and getting ripped off by paying too much, whether its for tomatoes, steak, kitchen cabinets or a new car, is the ultimate expression of being a freier.

Nor is this confined to Anglo olim, although we fall for it far more frequently. This is a country where you are expected to stand up for yourself and watch out for your own interests. Israelis do, and expect you to be Israeli also.

If Anglo olim fall for it more frequently, it's because we have two handicaps beyond the language barrier: the first is that we are perceived as "rich" and hence most Israelis think that if you jack up the price just a bit, well, the Anglos can afford it. Second, we're perceived as wimps -- if you jack up the price just a bit, well....they're Anglos, they won't make much of a fuss. We're tooooo nice, in Israeli estimation.

Nor is this a Jewish thing. One of the funniest scenes in a popular sit-com here ("Arabs Working") centers on a Arab family dealing with life here. The grandfather tells his adult son that he wouldn't get stopped so often at the checkpoints if he drove something other than a Suburu, the ubiquitous working-class car of the region. He offers to help his son, and gets him a "deal" on a more respectable model of car. The father has gone to a friend of his, and gets the price from his friend, then tells his son to take this "deal" in which the father himself has added 10,000 NIS to the price in order to get for himself a 'piece of the action'.....

Welcome to the Middle East. We all have relatives like this.

In Israel, it is understood that if something is a bit off, its okay to get hysterical and angry. It's mostly an act--but an effective one. For example:

The job foreman at our building keeps a record of what each buyer is purchasing that is an "extra" not provided by the builder. A sink on our porch is such an extra. The foreman, when this issue came up, went to the porch with us and asked where we wanted to install the sink. We showed him. He then handed the notebook with this entry to Yossi and tells him to sign off on it (this was Yossi's idea--he told us he should sign so he knows exactly what we're getting, otherwise the foreman could put anything down and we wouldn't necessarily know what we're signing for since our Hebrew reading skills approach illiteracy). Yossi looked at the entry just made by the foreman in the notebook, and promptly went ballistic.

"Seven hundred dollars??! Seven hundred dollars?!! Are you crazy?! All you're doing is putting a couple of pipes there! Do I look like I just got off the plane?! Do I look like a rich American?! I'M not paying $700 for some pipes -- and she isn't paying it either!!" He thrust the notebook, unsigned, back to the foreman.

The foreman smiled, and said something in a reasonable tone of voice which I didn't catch.

"No! I'm not signing! You write down the sink, but I'm not signing for seven hundred dollars! I'll talk to the kablan and you'll see -- it won't cost seven hundred dollars!" Yossi stormed.

The foreman's expression changed from beseaching to angry. He raised his voice, raised his hand clutching the pencil, and shook his fist at the heavens while shouting about signing the notebook. His second, another supervisor at the job site, joined the group on the porch and tried to intervene. He was shouted down by both men. Yossi's back went rigid and he shouted back at the foreman, stabbing his finger angrily at the notebook. The electrician then joined us, but he stayed out of it, simply watching, as both men wound themselves into a melodramatic display of righteousness. Their voices got louder, rising in crescendos of anger and indignation. I wondered for just a moment if it was wise to be up on the mirpesset with the railings not-yet installed during the heat of this confrontation. Finally, it ended. Abruptly. There was sudden agreement, total tonal change, expressions of yihiye beseder, habibi, shrugs, smiles and some laughter, and everyone went away.

"You get the pipes and fixtures for free," Yossi told me. "All you have to do is buy the sink." He explained that the pipes are already in the outer wall, and hence its simply a matter of extending them to a nearby corner for the sink. He also explained that since we put in our own bathroom sink and fixtures, instead of the "standard" sink and fixtures, the builder "owes" us those standard fixtures which will be affixed to the outside porch sink at no extra charge.

It's all about making sure one doesn't get taken for a freier. Yossi knows exactly what a buyer is entitled to, and works hard to make sure we get it. It's why he insisted on being there with us, insisted on signing the special order notebook, insisted that when he went on vacation this summer we NOT SIGN ANYTHING!!

He's told us that he doesn't want us to buy a bottle of water in this country without him -- because he knows a bottle of water is 7 NIS and that as soon as we open our American-accented mouths, we'll get charged 8 NIS.

And so, unlike us greenhorns, he notices immediately if something is just a bit off--such as manual trissim instead of electric. It's could be a mistake by the installer -- but to the sabra mind, it just might be a rip-off and hence needs to be fixed at this very moment! Before the installer makes a freier out of him!

Thank G-d for Yossi!

He handles his own business this way also. I happened to be running errands one day when he said he wanted to stop and pick up the new curtains his wife had ordered. They had taken their time looking at different materials and colors and finally picked something that they both loved. They knew of a shop that takes material you've purchased and turns it into curtains. His wife took the material to the shop and bargained with the owner, who offered a discount. They agreed upon a price, and his wife left a deposit with the owner. The owner, in turn, gave his wife a receipt showing the balance owing.

A week later, Yossi went to pick up these curtains and was told that the balance owing was substantially more than what was written on the receipt. He argued. The owner argued. He pointed out that this was the agreed price, they left a deposit as agreed, and here is the written balance owed. So why is it now substantially more?

The shop owner's answer was that she made a mistake. When discussing the price with Yossi's wife, she inadvertantly gave her a discount on the already-discounted price because the owner felt "rushed" by his wife's hurry that day.

"So?" Yossi asked, "This is my wife's fault? You make a math error and somehow it's her fault? No! This is your mistake -- we had no idea what figure you had it mind, we simply took the price you quoted with the discount. It's not my wife's fault that you made a mistake because you hurried."

"You have to pay the correct price or I'm not giving you the curtains," the owner retorted.

"Fine, keep the curtains, but then you give me my money back!" Yossi shot back.

"WHAT?! No way! We've already done the work--and what would I do with your curtains?" she sputtered.

"I don't care!" Yossi told her. "This is your mistake. I'm not paying more because you made a math mistake or quoted us a price you now regret."

One of the men in the shop came over and offered the owner his advice: "Let it go. This isn't worth it for 50 shekels."

"You shut-up!" she snapped. "It's not coming out of your pocket!"

Yossi suddenly turned down the heat, saying calmly, "Fine, Giveret, keep the curtains and keep the money. I have the receipt showing the deposit and the balance owing in your own handwriting. I will go to court, show it to the judge, and let the judge decide who is right and who is wrong."

That did the trick. Yossi left with the new curtains, having paid exactly what was written on the receipt.

But as I left with him, I wondered how many freiers have come to pick up their curtains and paid an extra 50 NIS because of some "mistake" in calculating the price.

And if you wonder why peace hasn't broken out despite Oslo, Wye, Geneva, and Annapolis, it is in large part because both parties think the other party is trying to make a freier out of them.....

Groveling To The Radical Chic

The nice thing about the Blogosphere is that we're not subjected to editorial blue-penciling or calls from the corporate lawyers.

Still, there is no excuse for the Jerusalem Post to have (apparently) censored Edwin Bennaton's Point/Counterpoint topic in which he takes issue with Seth Freedman's column in Al Guar-dian.

At which point do absurd comparisons become blatantly offensive? The Guardian's Seth Freedman recently compared the western media to the Al-Aqsa television station. You need to realize just how perverse this station really is in order to fully grasp the absurdity of Freedman's comparison.

Here's a brief glimpse of Al-Aqsa TV, which was launched by Hamas in 2006 as part of its campaign to counter what it saw as Israeli propaganda in the western media. The station transmits news, documentaries, and children's programs from Gaza.

A Mickey Mouse lookalike character tells children that he will eat the Jews, and then sings "We will never recognize Israel", while a little girl joins in for the refrain: "Until we liberate our homeland from the Zionist filth."

A TV bunny is tempted by Satan to steal, and is sentenced by children viewers to be punished according to the Koran, by having his hand chopped off. He then threatens to kill the people of Denmark for the publication of a cartoon that illustrates the prophet Muhammad.

And in a particular potent strain of edification, Arab children are stuffed into a crematorium embellished with a nazi swastika and a Jewish Star of David, while for more mature viewers, a Hamas documentary program explains that it was the Jews who planned the Holocaust in order to kill other Jews who were handicapped.

The station's news broadcast reports that Israel is creating artificial earthquakes to shake the foundations of the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, and in an interview with Agence France-Presse, the station's news manager, Ibrahim Daher, explains: "We adapt news so that it is compatible with our culture, the values of our people, and Islam".

Freedman recently summarized his impressions of the television station after having spent some time with a Palestinian family in the West Bank watching the news with two of his host's sons.

He implies that there is a balance of bias between the way the supposedly pro-Israel media disseminates information from the Middle East and the way Hamas television reports its version of events. He states: "The abandoning of western media parlance... in favor of an entirely different lexicon was a rude awakening for me, having been fed on a vastly different diet over the years." (Freedman is a fairly recent immigrant to Israel from Britain.)

Freedman sees an equitable parallel between the Hamas broadcasts on the one hand and the Israel and Western media (he combines the two) on the other; they are basically two sides of the same coin. "...it would be "wholly understandable" if a viewer of al-Aqsa TV who tuned into any western station from the BBC to Sky News and beyond felt a mirror-image outrage simply because of the terms used to describe the conflict."

And regarding the news broadcast that he was watching with his host's sons, he adds, “...the terms used ...were indicative of how wide the gulf is between ordinary citizens "on either side of the divide".

Freedman's lengthy introduction leads up to his main point: the vocabulary that is used to describe the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is always unavoidably offensive to one side and acceptable to the other, due to the sides' different perspectives of the conflict. Thus, whenever Freedman tries "to call a spade a spade" he inevitably finds himself under fire from one side or the other. (Of course in his case the fire almost exclusively come from the Israeli side, because he rarely, if ever, has anything good to say about his newfound homeland.)

Freedman gives examples of his difficulty in calling a spade a spade. According to Freedman, the Palestinians are upset with the use of the terms settlers instead of colonists, and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) instead of the more appropriate (according to Freedman) Israel Occupying Forces.

On the other hand, Israelis are upset with the term apartheid despite it being the more appropriate term for the situation in the West Bank (according to Freedman), and with the term pogrom to describe the destruction by the IDF in Palestinians villages, which is a term that Freedman believes has been "arrogated by certain Jewish people for their exclusive use, and only then in relation to the Jews' own historical suffering." (Freedman is apparently unaware that the term 'pogrom' entered English from Yiddish/Russian where it described the carnage of Jews in Eastern Europe.)

By his defense of these egregious descriptors, Freedman has set himself up as an apologist for the excesses of the Al-Aqsa station. In particular, his attempt to explain away the sensitivity of Israelis towards the careless use of the term 'pogrom' is inexcusable, considering that as a Jew and an Israeli he cannot claim ignorance.

Freedman concludes with one of his more remarkable statements. "While I understand how emotionally invested people (myself included) become when focusing on the conflict," he says, "we should not allow a situation where plainly-spoken facts are dismissed simply because the reader or viewer feels uncomfortable with the truth." In other words, those who reject the use of descriptors such as apartheid, Israel Occupying Forces, and pogroms, are clearly doing so because they are "uncomfortable with the truth". The possibility doesn't even enter Freedman's mind that they are rejecting these terms because they are uncomfortable with falsehoods.

While Freedman's most extreme allegations have been omitted here, he himself is a living rebuttal to his own claims. In Israel, he can call a spade a spade whenever he wishes; in fact he can even call it a pogrom. This is one of the benefits of living in a free society, - a privilege certainly not afforded by Hamas to the Gaza viewers of Al-Aqsa TV.

The Jerusalem Post would like to apologize to Seth Freedman for certain comments that appeared on our site following a September 1 blog entry written by Edwin Bennatan that were defamatory, threatening, and inappropriate.

Like Lurker, who first brought this to my attention at The Muqata, I understand an apology for not controlling the Talkback Trolls at the JPost -- they're a pretty horrific group as a rule, many of them given to open incitement, denigration and hatred in their posts.

So apologize for lousy editing and fire the Talkback editor(s).

DON'T censor the article itself.

And by the way, when Seth infers something improper in Jews' use of the word "pogrom" ("pogroms – the word having been somehow arrogated by certain Jewish people for their exclusive use, and only then in relation to the Jews' own historical suffering") he is patently incorrect:

Pogrom (Origin: 1880–85; (< Yiddish) < Russ pogróm lit., destruction, devastation (of a town, country, etc., as in war), n. deriv. of pogromít’, equiv. to po- perfective prefix + gromít’ to destroy, devastate, deriv. of grom thunder:) An organized, often officially encouraged massacre or persecution conducted against Jews.

Seth Freedman seems to have no idea why we have a Jewish state. He writes as if its because Zionism is some colonialist racist movement. No, Seth -- we have a state of our own so we can defend our children against pogroms, big and small, and so that photos like this one, of murdered Jewish children laid out in the streets, won't continue to be part of the historical archive.

How refreshing. Loved Lisa's Lebanon coverage. She's a straight-shooter and her stuff is worth following.

Hate From The Rabidocrats

I am at a loss for a word or words to describe the on-going coalescence of left/liberal politics with right-wing Jew-hating expressed individually against Jews and collectively against Israel.

The only label that seems to fit is "Rabidocrats" (changed from "Neo-Libs" when I was searching for a label earlier--thanks to Haim at South Jerusalem). I don’t know how else to describe these folks. They’re not the Leftists of liberal persuasion I knew in college, believing in world wide brotherhood, ending the Vietnam War, universal suffrage and literacy, an end to poverty, and a fair deal for the working man. They have the Leftist cant down, but their audience appears to be both those who revere Che Guevara and still await The Revolution, and the out-and-out Far Right Neo-Nazi antiSemites.

Israel, once understood as a world-wide exercise in ending anti-Semitism and providing the Jewish people with self-determination, is now rebranded by the Neo-Lib sector with the propagandistic Left-wing and very mendacious label "colonialist" --and hence deserving of extermination, a genocide previously only sought by the fascistic and racist Right.

What a poisonous blend.

I'm a regular lurker at Elder of Zyon, and through his post Anti-semites HATE Palin found out about Mark Glenn.

Following up a bit on Glenn, I found a site which lists as recommended sources such diverse choices as al Jazeera, the Guardian (okay, that’s not too much of a contrast), the Electronic Intifada, Counterpunch, Rense (the world’s most virulently anti-Semitic conspiracy site), Noam Chomsky, Michael Moore, B’Tselem, Nostradamus, Jihad Unspun, Arianna Huffington, Nicaragua Network……and so on.

Nostradamus?!

A big clue is their advertising: “Mountain High Imports Palestinian Olive Oil” Next to that is “The Left’s Response to Ann Coulter" and the “Iraqi Deaths Due to US Invasion” showing a highly suspect body count widely discredited already in other forums.

In the Mission Statement, the webmaster opines that Bunker Busters brought down the WTC in order to justify the war sought by a cabal of Neocons. But war isn’t the Neocons only goal, folks—nope, its nothing less than World Wide Domination:

“Instead of improving the quality of life on earth, the neocons represent a 'new world plantation order'. Their goal is to fully and rapaciously exploit not only the American people, but all of humanity, and the resources of the planet… The neocons and their corporate masters intend nothing less than the total subjugation of every man woman and child in what could only be called a fascist military industrial hell state…America's young people and hundreds of thousands, or perhaps millions of innocent men women and children around the world will be slaughtered by the neocon gang in their blood soaked quest.”

But I digress. One contributor to this horrific web site is Mark Glenn, a rabid anti-Semite who sets forth every lie about Israel as fact, and denigrates Sarah Palin as “Israel’s Bitch.” This is because Palin believes “the fatal myth that the Jews are ‘God’s chosen’ and endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, namely stealing the real estate between the two ‘great rivers’ of the Nile and the Euphrates as well as the right to murder anyone they see fit at anytime they so decide”

Right. Let’s see, we withdrew from both the Sinai and Gaza because we wanted waterfront property on the Nile River. We’re seriously discussing an evacuation-and-compensation plan for withdrawal from the West Bank; this is no doubt further evidence to the fevered mind of this hate-monger that we want to conquer everything between the Jordan and the Euphrates. Go figure.

Nevermind that nowhere does this cretin show any understanding that “chosen people” meant chosen to receive and follow the laws of the Torah, rather than chosen to be latter-day conquistadores of the Middle East.

Nor is there anything in the Basic Law, the founding documents of Israel or the Torah or Talmud that imbues us with “the right to murder anyone we see fit at any time we so decide.” I seem to remember a different law handed down to the Chosen People: Thou shall not commit murder. In the 610 mitzvot, this one ranked pretty high.

Of course, you can’t reason with a willfully ignorant Jew-hating fanatic like this. He knows nothing about the subject other than the hate he spews which he has no doubt plagiarized from other similar lies and diatribes. (He claims to have once been a high school teacher before he became a writer....the mind shudders at the thought of this left-wing racist teaching children).

Here’s what he says about Judaism:

Glenn goes on to lay out his dream of a Judenrein future:

The western world going about its business of implementing the principles taught by its founder, Jesus of Nazareth. No threat of nuclear holocaust and our children sleeping safely at night with a veritable future ahead of them…{but} if we–by some miracle–were able to get rid of this thing known as Zionism as well as it’s physical manifestation–meaning the state of Israel, it would all be back in due time. We would only get a small respite, but it wouldn’t be gone for good. Like carving out a section of a cancer-riddled lung, all you are doing is buying time if you don’t quit smoking, and that is because the thing that caused this cancer in the first place has remained in tact, and it is that ‘thing’ known as Judaism. .. Israel exists for one purpose and one purpose only, which is to function as a hideout for those who live in the same state of perpetual war against everyone else that Judaism dictates. Judaism is nobody’s friend, and the sooner that the rest of us–Jew and non-Jew alike–come to realize this, the better off we will be. Get rid of it. It is a cancer. Despite being touted by a Lefty website, you can also find Glenn featured on David Duke’s site, home of the Ku Klux Klan's political face. Glenn also has his own web-site. Don't go there. Seriously. It's uglier than what's posted here.

What IS alarming is that Glenn and his proxy webmasters are rooting for Obama.

And the Left castigates the conservatives in this country as "right-wing fanatics?" Clean out the bats in the Left's belfry first, methinks.

Why publish this offal? Yes, I know its nauseating. However, I think shining some light into the dark corners of the Rabidocrat agenda serves a purpose. These people are out there. They teach in high schools and colleges; they write blogs, columns and attend political discussions. They write letters-to-the-editor and op-ed pieces. They believe the lies and accept the genocidal intent of their propagandists, like Glenn. They wrap themselves in the labels "liberal" or "left-wing" in order to assert an aura of democratic, socialist respectability, when in reality they are simply subscribers to the oldest hatred on earth.

It's here!!

Actually, we don't have it in hand yet, but we have it from reliable inside super-secret sources that the kablan has it!

For those readers Stateside, the "04," also known as "the key," is the transfer of title from the builder to the buyer.

After over a year of anticipation, hair-pulling, agonizing, money-juggling and paying too much rent, we're finally getting into our new place!!

I'm not looking forward to moving--it's always a pain to pack. I'm not looking forward to the headache of changing the phones, getting the utilities in our name, changing the teudat zehut.

I AM looking forward to finally being in my own home with, as Maureen O'Hara put it so aptly in The Quiet Man, "with all of my own things around me." I'm looking forward to paying ONLY the mortgage instead of both mortgage and rent (again, for the Statesiders, when you buy, you start paying the mortgage immediately, never mind you can't move into the place for 14 months!).

I'm looking forward to being settled.

And given Olmert's most recent posture on Givat Ze'ev, French Hill, Gilo and Ma'aleh Adumim, I'm glad I'm "settling" in Har Homa.

I'm sure that my neighborhood is under discussion also. If Olmert-The-Idiot is willing to "negotiate" Gilo, he's probably willing to negotiate Har Homa.

I'm an NRA member. The most famous saying of the NRA* is "You'll get my gun when you pry it out of my cold, dead fingers." I feel much the same way about my home.

It looks like we'll be homeward bound shortly, and moved in and "settled" by the end of October.

A Public Correction

Several posts back, I took Jeff Halper to task.

I have since corrected that post to remove the name of the university I identified as being his employer. I am doing this at the request of the university, which sent me the following email:

Please note that Dr. Jeff Halper was never a “professor” at {name deleted on request} University. Many years ago, he was an outside lecturer (“adjunct lecturer”) for a total of two semesters, and as such, he cannot claim that he was a “faculty member” of our institution, much less a tenured professor.

Therefore, we strongly object to the repeated assertions that are travelling around the internet (e.g., http://www.blogger.com/profile/12570980519532246704) that he is a “former faculty member” or “professor of anthropology” of {name deleted on request} University, or any like claim.

We request that you remove all references associating Dr. Jeff Halper with {name deleted on request} University from your internet site(s) and that you refrain from doing so in the future.

Today I am correcting it publicly both here and in the original post, so the correction cannot be missed. I think I've corrected adequately. This is one of the problems with non-journalistic blogging (discussed at some length at South Jerusalem): as a diarist, I tend to rely on the sources I read (Haaretz, Jerusalem Post, al Arabiya, other blogs with good track records and original sources posted, etc.) but I'm not a journalist. Hence, I don't do things like telephone the university in question and confirm that Halper is or is not a professor there---I rely on the journalists in the media to do that. That's their job.

Of course, they don't always do their job, and I'm guilty of making an assumption, but that's why its a blog and not an Op-Ed in Haaretz.

It is, however, heartening to find that his former employer doesn't want its good name besmirched by association with Halper, and even better news that Halper has had his euros taken away from him.

It's apparently not true that "there's no such thing as bad publicity."

Here is the Israeli government, trying to reach a peace agreement with the Palestinians and towards that end actually outlining a plan to evacuate the settlements and pay compensation to the settlers.

The Arab response: pogroms.

That’s right, imitate your idiot cousins in Gaza, don’t build a state, prove to the world that you really are Terror, Inc., graduate from rock-throwing to Kassam-firing, and we’ll be back to Operation Defensive Shield and Round Three of the Occupation in no time at all.

What’s wrong with you people?!

The evacuation-compensation bill under discussion proposes offering NIS 1.1 million to families willing to move out of West Bank settlements. The numbers differ at points in various media outlets, but it's a large number.

During the meeting about the bill, Vice Premier Haim Ramon presented the cabinet with an outline of bill, which is estimated at a total cost of NIS 2.5 billion. The plan would offer settlers who choose to relocate to the Negev an additional 25 percent compensation and those who agree to move the Galilee region an additional 15 percent.

18 percent of the 60,000 settlers currently living in the West Bank have said they would be willing to relocate, according to one survey of questionable provence. A survey conducted by the Prime Minister's Office (another highly questionable provence given his track record) showed that more than 11,000 settlers living beyond the security barrier would agree to leave their homes.

Ramon told the cabinet members that, "The evacuation of residents of Judea and Samaria is an unavoidable step for those who believe in two states for two peoples - and that includes most of the Israeli public." He left out, "in Tel Aviv." Those of us substantially closer to the borders look at Sderot and ask, "What, are you nuts?!"

And the Arab response:

Sunday morning 7:57 am -- "Rock-throwing Arab terrorists moved from Judea and Samaria to the high-speed Highway 6 (Kvish 6) Sunday morning and wounded a couple and their baby. The attack occurred near the Horeshim junction, near a large Israeli Arab town located south of Kalkilya and Kfar Saba. The victims suffered light wounds from glass in the windshield that was shattered by the rock throwers and were treated in Bellinson Hospital in Petach Tikva. No one has been arrested for the attack. Hurling rocks and stones at Jewish cars occurs virtually every day in Judea and Samaria, where Arab terrorists try to force drivers to lose control of their cars and crash." (Israel National News--I don't control editorial content here).

Sunday morning 10:44 am -- Firebomb Attacks in Beit El

Arabs attacked the city of Beit El with firebombs twice over the weekend, security forces reported Sunday. The first attack took place late on Friday night, when a group of Arab men, apparently residents of a nearby village, approached Beit El and threw a firebomb towards the city. The attack caused a fire and damaged a security fence. Soldiers who witnessed the incident refrained from firing on the attackers. An officer later said that the attackers were standing 300 meters from the soldiers and did not pose a significant threat, so there was no reason to use force.Following the incident, a group of Arab men returned and attacked the city again on Saturday night, this time throwing three firebombs. Soldiers did not open fire. Residents of Beit El expressed anger, saying that if soldiers continued to refrain from using force during firebomb attacks, the attacks would continue.

Near Tekoa, from the same source: Arab stone throwers hurled rocks at Jewish motorists in the eastern Gush Etzion town of Tekoa, hitting at least one tour bus and lightly injuring two passengers. Soldiers responded by shooting in the air, and said they were not aware of any injuries to the Arab attackers.

And

An Arab terrorist stabbed a nine-year-old Jewish boy at the Shalhevet neighborhood in Yitzhar in Samaria on the Sabbath, torched an empty house and tried to set fire to a second building. The terrorist threw the boy four meters down off of an outdoor porch, into an area filled with construction material - yet he landed on the only bush in the area. He was treated in a nearby hospital and was said to be in light condition. Dozens of residents of Yitzhar retaliated and attacked the adjacent Arab village of Asira al-Kabaliya, where it is suspected the terrorist resides. Villagers claimed that the Jews rioted in the village, destroyed houses, overturned vehicles and shot at least two Arabs. Arabs threw rocks and stones at the Jews until IDF soldiers arrived, broke up the riots and slapped a curfew on the village. The troops arrested one suspect in the stabbing.

A relatively unknown terrorist group calling itself Ahrar Al-Jalil (Freedom for the Galilee) Brigades claimed responsibility for the arson and attack on the boy. The same group claimed it was behind two bulldozer and backhoe attacks in Jerusalem earlier this year in which three people were killed and several were wounded.

I cannot think of any actions that would more strongly unite the Israeli public against evacuating the West Bank than these attacks. We already know that "land-for-peace" didn't work in Sderot and the other communities being barraged from Gaza; why would the Palestininas think that these attacks in the West Bank assist their cause?

Urban Planning

Short post. There isn't any as far as I can tell.

In Baka, the residents are once again taking to the streets to protest the planned diversion of traffic from Derech Hebron to Derech Bet Lechem.

Now, on a map downtown at Kikar Safra this probably looked like a good idea. "Hey, Schmuely, look! There's this big arterial with all this traffic, Derech Hebron, and we can just move it to the adjacent big arterial and use Hebron for the buses! No problem!"

This would make sense if looking only at the map, because Bet Lechem and Hebron are two equally fat lines on the city maps for some reason.


In fact, they are nothing alike. Hebron was designed as a large arterial, with two southbound lanes separated from the two northbround lanes by a two lane mass transit/commuter lane. In short, a six-lane highway.

Bet Lechem is the same donkey-cart track used in King David's time, only paved. Two cars can pass on Bet Lechem, an otherwise quiet, tree-lined, shady residential lane, if they are both careful (picture, above, looking southbound on Bet Lechem). In the "commercial center" between Esther Hamalca and Miriam Hashmonit, cars tread carefully, since there is barely enough room for one car to pass because people actually park on the side of the road to shop here.

But the City Fathers, in their infinite ignorance, have decided to route the 2000 cars per hour that travel on Hebron to Bet Lechem.

Bet you lunch not one of these geniuses ever got out of his air-conditioned office and came down here and actually LOOKED at the road. Besides, what do they care? THEY don't live here, I'd opine. No one who lives here thinks this is feasible. The traffic alone makes it impossible. I don't even want to discuss the elderly, the disabled and the children in the neighborhood who now have to cross commuter-enraged drivers on Bet Lechem.

Abu Tor, the mixed Jewish-Arab neighborhood a couple of blocks northeast of us, which overlooks the Old City and the Kidron Valley, has apparently lost its fight to stop a huge mall from being imposed on the neighborhood. From our corner up the street, we see the foundations of something huge being dug into what was once the lower portion of the quiet, woodsy Peace Park that tumbled down from the Hill of Evil Counsel (otherwise known as U.N. HQ--really, no joke, that's the name of the hill...giggle). But now this project is under construction despite community opposition.

The Jerusalem Post described this project: "The proposed cultural center, which is slated to be built just off Hebron Road adjacent to the mixed neighborhood's entrance to the lush Haas Promenade and the popular Taverna restaurant, will span 17,330 sq.m., and will include seven cinema halls and four coffee shops and restaurants as well as an auditorium, a library, an Internet cafe and various seminar rooms and galleries."

Cultural Center??!! Hardly. This is a mall complex, and the quiet narrow lanes of Abu Tor will be hard pressed to accomodate the traffic. Even with underground parking, the traffic will back up on Naomi Street and out on to Derech Hebron.

Who's On First?

Now the Democrats are comparing candidate Obama to Jesus of Nazareth, and the Republican VP candidate Palin to Pilate.

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn): "Barack Obama was a community organizer like Jesus, who our minister prayed about. Pontius Pilate was a governor."

The election has suddenly become surrealy interesting: the Right is running a woman for VP, and the Left, that party of Feminism, Women's Rights and "inclusiveness" is attacking her; the Left is suddenly invoking Jesus.

Huh??

Now, the Democratic Party chairman from South Carolina dismissed Palin's qualifications altogether by snidely remarking that "[Palin's] primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion.”

Offensive, condescending, outrageously sexist personal attacks like this from one of Obama's party chiefs certainly isn't helping his campaign. To her credit (yes, her), Ms. Fowler later apologized, stating that she was merely making a point about "people in South Carolina who may vote based on a single issue."

Such as, the candidate is female?

A remark like this is an insult to every woman citizen, not just to Sarah Palin. It is nothing more than "biology is destiny" and that women (but not men) should be judged by their sexuality and what they do with it.

So far, Mr. Obama has not apologized for this crass display of misogyny, merely remarking through his campaign that he can't be responsible for what his state party members say. "Obama campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan said: "Carol Fowler was speaking for herself. Her comments do not reflect our views in any way.""

Fair enough. Now denounce those comments--or does Party loyalty extend to providing cover for outrageously demeaning sexist attacks?

Temptations

Temptation:

1. the act of tempting; enticement or allurement.
2. something that tempts, entices, or allures.
3. the fact or state of being tempted, esp. to evil.

Synonyms 1. lure, attraction, pull, seduction, inducement.

We all know what this is. We joke about illicit sex and chocolate, the staples of temptation, referencing the age old failure of marital fidelity and diets.

Most of us can walk away from the Big Temptations: adultery, murdering the guy who just cut you off in traffic, eating an entire container of Ben & Jerry's ice cream when dieting......

Yet I have to confess to having a contrary streak. Of all the mitzvot H"S gave us, know what I have the biggest problem with?

Meat and milk. That's right. Easy mitzvah, really. Easier than just about anything.....except that for some odd reason, every time I have something with meat, I have an instantaneous craving for an ice cream cone. Or a yoghurt. Or a slice of cheese.

I think I have an oppositional-defiant streak, but why it only surfaces with the meat/milk issue, I have no idea.

Contrary to a rumor started by The Husband, I do cook. I made a stew last night for Shabbat. All good stuff: meat, a nice red wine, broth, seasonings, potatoes, carrots, onions, mushrooms......and almost unconsciously I tasted the stew, picking up a spoonful of the broth with a small piece of meat in it.

"Mmmmmmm," I said, savoring it, and then almost immediately thought, S***! Now I'm fleishik!" That moment of appreciation for a dish that shows every sign of turning out splendidly was immediately spoiled by my own contrariness.

Okay, so I can't have ice cream. So what? I'm on a diet and don't even keep ice cream in the house, ferhevvinsake!!

Why does this bother me? I think because its such a little thing, and I feel like I should be above it, and also, I have this suspicion that I'm the only person in the world who suffers from this perverse temptation to run out and eat a grilled cheese sandwich immediately after eating something with meat in it.

Who Remembers What Day It Is Today?

IN MEMORIAM

Seven years ago today, people got up and went to work. Some commuted to downtown New York City, others to their offices in the Pentagon. Still others caught flights to the West Coast. Among the latter were folks that weren't necessarily traveling for business. Some were traveling to visit families. One young inner-city boy was traveling with his teacher, thrilled to be the winner of his school's academic contest, the prize for which was a free trip to Disneyland. Fathers and mothers; sons and daughters; grandparents and babies.

They were nearly all civilians. They died because of the twisted philosophy of hatred espoused by their killers, Arab men seduced by the extremism of jihad.

They killed for hate. They took pride in their killings. Almost everyone knows the name of Osama bin Ladin but who knows the victims, except for their families who still suffer the empty seats at the dinner table, or miss the goodnight hug?

This is them. Let's not forget that this isn't about politics. It's about murder of the innocent who did nothing to deserve their awful deaths. One day a year, this day, look at their names and remember them.
